2026 Legal Sales Executive of the Year: Mark Howe Sets the Standard for Strategic Growth

The Legal Sales and Service Organization (LSSO) is proud to recognize Mark Howe, Director of Business Development & Client Relations at Thompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP (TDS), as the 2026 Legal Sales Executive of the Year. A pioneer of professional law firm sales in North America, Howe has spent more than a decade demonstrating that business development is far more than networking or relationship management—it is a disciplined, client-centered growth strategy that can transform firm culture and drive measurable results.

What distinguished Howe from this year’s field of outstanding nominees was his ability to combine direct sales execution, client experience initiatives, strategic account management, and internal culture change into a unified growth engine. While many professionals excel in one area, Howe has successfully integrated all four, creating a model that delivers both immediate revenue opportunities and long-term client loyalty.

The results speak for themselves. Under Howe’s leadership, TDS achieved a remarkable 96.63% retention rate among strategic account clients and generated an NPS score of 82 in 2025. His Client Feedback Interview program not only strengthened client relationships but also preserved two at-risk accounts that have produced more than $2 million in combined fees. Meanwhile, firm data revealed that clients expanding from two services to three generated an average 57% increase in revenue, highlighting Howe’s success in driving cross-selling and account growth.

His direct sales accomplishments are equally impressive. One standout example involved a five-year effort to cultivate a relationship with the CEO of a construction company. Through consistent engagement, strategic networking, and thoughtful use of referral relationships, Howe ultimately transitioned the company’s legal work to TDS and helped secure a seven-figure M&A mandate for the firm. The story exemplifies a key principle of effective legal sales: significant opportunities often emerge not from quick wins, but from patient, deliberate relationship building.

Beyond individual client wins, Howe has helped reshape how lawyers at TDS think about business development. According to the firm’s leadership, business development was once viewed by many lawyers as outside the scope of professional practice. Through coaching, training, strategic account planning, and relentless focus on results, Howe helped make client development a core part of the firm’s culture. Today, business development is embedded across the organization rather than concentrating among a small group of rainmakers.

For LSSO members, Howe’s work offers several important lessons. First, client retention deserves as much attention as new-client acquisition. Second, structured client feedback programs can uncover growth opportunities while protecting valuable relationships. Third, cross-selling succeeds when firms intentionally create visibility into their lawyers’ capabilities. Finally, sustainable growth requires more than generating leads—it requires building a culture where lawyers embrace client development as part of delivering exceptional client service.

Mark Howe’s career demonstrates that the most effective legal sales leaders are not simply generating revenue; they are building systems, habits, and cultures that create enduring value for clients and firms alike. That combination of measurable impact, strategic leadership, and commitment to client success makes him a truly deserving recipient of the 2026 Legal Sales Executive of the Year Award.
